Elvira Bohos Keremyan was born on 22.09.1980 in the town of Varna. She graduated high school education from the high school “Kliment Ohridski”.

Since 2000 she opened her own company ET”Sandra – Elvira Keremyan” with a business activity in the sphere of tourism and service.

On 05.03.2006 she was admitted to the Specialized Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology – “Maychin dom” Varna for a planned Cesarean Section.

A spinal anesthesia was performed at the level of L 3-4 lumbar vertebra at 8.15. Fifteen minutes after the beginning of the spinal anesthesia at 8.30 her son was born – Michael with a weight of 3900 gr. and a height of 53 cm.

Two minutes after the child was born, according to the data from the epicrisis, an extreme hypotension appeared, followed by ceasing of the heart activity and breathing.

Five minutes after the incident she regained her heart activity, but didn’t regain consciousness.

After a consultation with Dr Savova – Head of the Department of Intensive care in MHAT “St. Anna”, a decision was taken to admit Elvira to the Department of Anesthesiology and intensive care in MHAT “St. Anna” for intensive treatment. She was in a grave general condition, coma – intubated, on the account of ineffective own breathing with convulsive symptoms and without regaining consciousness.

On 11.05.2006 – 66 days after numerous consultations and examinations and struggle for her life by the medical staff of Dr Savova, Elvira is transferred to the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Intensive care of MMA/ MILITARY MEDICAL ACADEMY/ – Sofia under the guidance of colonel ass. Prof. N. Petrov, in a grave condition, with heavy contractures, with a spontaneous breathing through a tracheostomy cannula, and with a stabile heart activity.

As a consequence of the incident, the medical examinations in MMA Sofia showed the following:

  • EEG – 07.06.2006 – The record is made while the patient was in a chronic vegetative state. The findings correspond to a medium degree encephalopathy.
  • MRI - 15.06.2006 – The findings correspond to external and a low degree internal hydrocephaly.
  • CT of the head - 28.06.2006 – the findings correspond to atrophy of the cortex, retouched border between the white and grey matter of the brain. No zones of ischemia are visualized.
  • It’s impossible to remove the tracheostomy cannula on account of absence of a conscious reflex of swallowing.
  • Heavy contractures of the four extremities are present.

On 12.07.2006 after staying 62 days in MMA – Sofia, Elvira was discharged and transferred to DAIC, HBAT- MMA/ MILITARY MEDICAL ACADEMY/ Varna.

Today - 5 of April – 395 days after the incident, her relatives continue the struggle for Elvira’s life.

For 395 days now the juridical and moral questions stay to the administration of the Specialized Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology – “Maychin dom” - Varna, with director Dr Yakov, and the medical staff, which was present at the operation:

  • Obstetrician: Dr Beyleryan
  • Assistant obstetrician – Dr Yudova
  • Anesthesiologist – Dr Dobreva
  • Person responsible for instruments – T. Murad

For the reasons and the manifested negligence during observation of the pregnancy of Elvira, that caused the incident. For the heartless and immoral attitude of the specialists from the point of view of Moral and medicine. They help life to be born and at the same time they don’t care about the living!!!

Next steps for the recovery and adaptation of Elvira:

1. Providing of an optimal sterile environment and professional care as a part of her therapy.

2. Finding and transferring her to a specialized hospital in Bulgaria or abroad, with approved experience in rehabilitation and intensive care of patients in coma.

3. Appointing of new MRI, CT, EEG examinations and a new course of hyper bar oxygenation in HBAT _ MMA/ MILITARY MEDICAL ACADEMY / Varna for 10 days.

4. Eventually accomplishing a set of orthopedic surgical interventions in connection with the heavy contractures of the extremities after regaining consciousness.

5. Eventually transplantation of truncal cells on account of the atrophy of the cortex after regaining consciousness.

Until now the everyday medical procedures, medical care and rehabilitation were a responsibility of the whole family. At the same time the little Michael needs mother’s love and he was deprived of it.

For that reason, our request is that everyone who was touched by our problems, to show his involvement with an information for leading medical institutions in Bulgaria and abroad for treatment of patients in coma, with juridical help or financial help.

And let the God blessing lights up those who will help one mother’s heart to beat stronger at the word Mother.
